Battery Equivalents and Replacements

Best Battery for Diesel Truck

Starting batteries can provide strong currents for very short periods of time, ensuring the safe starting of gas and diesel car and truck engines.

However, not all trucks are made equal, and starting large 6-7+ liter diesel engines during cold winter nights after being drained by various parasite loads can put a rather large strain on the battery, requiring strong and reliable batteries.

Intro to Diesel Truck Batteries

Trucks vary in size, so do their engines, too. Depending on the size and type of truck, diesel engines vary from just a few (2-3) liters to large monster size 10-20+ liter units.

On average, most trucks come with diesel engines in the 5-10 liters range.

One of the specifics of diesel engines is that they require more cranking Amps than gas engines due to the higher compression. Also, diesel heaters can draw some current before actual cranking starts - although this current is much lower than the cranking current, it should not be ignored, especially during the winter months.

trucks w400px

The number of batteries in the trucks also varies - smaller trucks require just one 12V battery capable of providing 800-1000 CCA Amps, medium trucks require a pair of 12V batteries capable of providing at least 800 CCA Amps, while large units require battery packs consisting of 4+ group 31 batteries or even stronger batteries (group 4D/8D, for example).

When looking for a new battery (or batteries) for your diesel truck, be sure to check the documentation of your vehicle and the number, size, and type of the batteries.

Also, be sure to check:

  • CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) - maximum current that a new, fully charged, 12V battery can deliver for 30 seconds, with the voltage NOT dropping below 7.2V, at 0°F (-18°C).
  • CA (Cranking Amps) or MCA (Marine Cranking Amps) - maximum current that a new, fully charged, 12V battery can deliver for 30 seconds, with the voltage NOT dropping below 7.2V at 32°F (0°C).
  • RC (Reserve Capacity) is the number of minutes that a new, fully charged battery (at 80°F, ~25°C) can deliver a 25A current and maintain a voltage above its cut-off value (10.5V for lead-acid batteries).
  • Capacity (Ah - Ampere/Amp-hours) describes how many Amps (A) the battery can provide for 20 hours before the voltage drops below a certain level.

Truck Battery Types

The most common truck battery types are wet/flooded, Gel-cell, and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) lead-acid, and lithium batteries.

Wet/flooded lead-acid batteries are not maintenance-free batteries, are not spill-proof, and are sensitive to terminal corrosion and vibrations. They are being phased out in favor of Gel and especially AGM batteries, but they are nonetheless still used in the form of Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB).

Gel Cell lead-acid batteries use electrolytes in the form of gel - diluted sulfuric acid is mixed with fumed silica to create gel, which is placed between battery plates. Gel cell lead-acid batteries are non-spillable batteries and most of them can safely operate regardless of the position.

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) lead-acid batteries use electrolytes that is held in the glass mats made out of woven, very thin glass fibers. As such, AGM lead-acid batteries are also a type of non-spillable batteries and most of them can safely operate regardless of their position.

Lithium automotive batteries are rechargeable batteries mostly based on the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry and features ultralight construction at a somewhat higher price. In order to make lithium batteries as safe as possible, lithium batteries feature the built-in Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the parameters of the battery (voltage, current, DoD, and similar) and protects the battery from unwanted events.

Although lithium batteries may save some weight, battery weight in diesel trucks is just a small fraction of the total weight, and personally, they are not worth the higher price. Also, lithium batteries are sensitive to low and high temperatures, charging conditions, etc.

For short, AGM or Gel-Cell lead-acid batteries are still the way to go when talking about diesel truck batteries. IMHO, of course.

Engine Starting Modules (EMS) are essentially supercapacitors, featuring very strong CCA currents, a huge number of charging-discharging cycles, and lower weight.

However, Engine Starting Modules (EMS) require (mostly) a dedicated connection to the engine starter and a few more tweaks in the vehicle's electric system.

Most trucks don't feature Engine Starting Modules (EMS) by default, but for vehicles operating at extremely low temperatures, EMS can be rather helpful.

Parallel/Series Connections - for the trucks that have 2 or more batteries, it is highly recommended to use the same batteries (same model) from the same brand, preferably from the same batch. This way, the differences between the batteries will be minimal, distributing the load on all batteries evenly, especially when connected properly.

Some larger trucks may also feature two battery (or battery pack) electric system where one starting battery (or battery pack) is used for cranking the engine, and another deep-cycle battery (or battery pack) is used for powering electric loads when the engine is turned off.

To prevent issues between the batteries, the batteries and thus electric systems are separated using battery isolators, preventing deep discharges of starting battery (or battery pack).

Such battery isolators are used in RVs, boats, and similar vehicles and vessels as well.

Group 48 (H6) Batteries

Standard Group 48 batteries feature dimensions of (L x W x H) 12 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 7 9/16 inches (12.0625 x 6.875 x 7.5625 inches, 306 x 175 x 192 mm) and is similar to the standard DIN H6 batteries (also labeled as L3 batteries) and EN 66L3 batteries that feature physical dimensions of (L x W x H) of 278 x 175 x 190 mm.

Generally, batteries labeled as H6 or L3 batteries (DIN standard) or EN 66L3 (EN standard) are considered to be BCI Group 48 equivalent batteries, and vice versa due to the similarities in size.

However, Group 98R have physical dimensions very close to the H6, L3, or 66L3 batteries:

  • Group 48: 306 x 175 x 192 mm,
  • H6, L3, 66L3: 278 x 175 x 190 mm,
  • Group 98R: 283 x 175 x 190 mm.

That is the reason why Group 98R is also considered as H6, L3, 66L3 battery equivalent battery.

But, just to be sure, always check the dimensions of your battery compartment, the dimensions of the old battery (or batteries), and the dimensions of the new battery - better safe than sorry!

For more reviews and recommendations, feel free to check the ACDelco Gold 94RAGM BCI Group 94R Battery Amazon link (link opens in the new window).

If You are looking for a true dual-purpose Group 94R battery, consider Odyssey 94R-850 or NorthStar NSB-AGM94R batteries. They are excellent performers, but also somewhat heavier than ACDelco, Deka, and Delphi batteries.

Honorable Mention: Group 31 Batteries

Group 31 batteries are relatively large batteries, featuring physical dimensions (L x W x H) of 13 x 6.8125 x 9.4375 inches (~33 x 17.3 x 24 cm) - they are larger than typical car/truck batteries but smaller than the very popular industrial 4D, 6D and 8D batteries.

The most popular group 31 batteries are AGM and Gel-Cell lead-acid batteries, with the lithium (LiFePO4) batteries becoming more and more popular, especially for deep-cycle applications.

Due to their size and weight, group 31 AGM and Gel-Cell batteries are built as dual-purpose and as deep-cycle batteries, with true starting group 31 batteries being very rare.

If You are looking for a starting/dual-purpose group 31 battery, go for sealed, spill-proof, maintenance-free AGM/Gel-Cell battery - drop-in lithium battery replacements can be great, but IMHO, lead-acid batteries are still the way to go when looking for a tough and durable group 31 battery.

Odyssey 31-PC2150S Heavy Duty Commercial Battery

odyssey 31 pc2150s w300px

Odyssey 31-PC2150 battery is made in several versions, including Odyssey 31-PC2150S Heavy Duty Commercial Battery.

Odyssey 31-PC2150S battery features a physical dimension of 13.06 x 6.89 x 9.59 inches (~33.2 x 17.5 x 24.4 cm), and it weighs 77.8 pounds (~35.3 kg).

The battery comes with a carrying handle, allowing the user to lift the battery and position it more easily - carrying 77.8 pounds battery around is not recommended.

Odyssey 31-PC2150S battery features a nominal capacity of 100 Ah, a CCA value of 1150(!) Amps, MCA (CA) value of 1370(!) Amps and an RC value of 205 minutes - it is a strong, reliable, and durable battery.

Note: If there is one battery in this article that deserves special attention, it is the Odyssey 31-PC2150S battery.

The main difference between Odyssey 31-PC2150 batteries are the type and orientation of battery terminals:

  • Odyssey 31-PC2150 comes in two versions, having 3/8" Stud or SAE battery terminals. Often, these batteries are labeled as 'Odyssey 31-PC2150T Heavy Duty Commercial Battery' or 'Odyssey 31-PC2150S Heavy Duty Commercial Battery' and indeed, they are batteries for heavy-duty commercial use.
  • Odyssey 31M-PC2150 features SAE and 3/8” Stud (positive) 5/16” Stud (negative) battery terminals. This battery is often labeled as 'Odyssey 31M-PC2150ST-M TROLLING Thunder Marine Dual Purpose Battery' since it can be used as both starting marine battery, but also as a deep cycle marine battery, including trolling fishing.
  • Odyssey 31R-PC2150 is just like Odyssey 31-PC2150, it just has terminal polarities reversed left and right.

Note: all versions of 31-PC2150 batteries have the same electrical performances (capacity, RC, CCA, MCA, etc).

Odyssey 31-PC2150 batteries are known for their deep discharge recovery ability, for their low-temperature operation (at -40°F (-40°C) Odyssey 31-PC1500 is able to provide 550 cranking amps for 30 seconds!), for mechanical ruggedness (don't hit them with a sledgehammer and they will be fine), etc.

Also, they accept the charge quickly and can be recharged in 4-6 hours.

Note: for example, some large(r) trucks feature 4 (four) group 31 batteries connected in parallel - 4 (four) Odyssey 31-PC2150 batteries connected in parallel feature MCA current of ~5500 Amps!

Although they are not cheap group 31 batteries, they are also not the most expensive lead-acid group 31 batteries.

If You are looking for a starting/dual-purpose group 31 battery, seriously consider this battery.

Optima 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Starting and Deep Cycle Battery

optima d31m w300px

Optima 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Starting and Deep Cycle Battery is a true dual-purpose battery featuring typical Optima's spiral-wound cells.

Because of such cells, the Optima D31M BlueTop battery features a somewhat smaller capacity of 75 Ah and an RC value of 155 minutes, but it also weighs "only" 59.8 pounds (27.1 kg).

But, the Optima D31M BlueTop battery is able to provide 900 CCA Amps and 1125 MCA Amps, which is far better than many other group 31 batteries featuring flat plates.

Optima D31M BlueTop battery is a spill-proof, maintenance-free battery that also cycles well and can be used for powering various loads while the engine is off.

However, due to the somewhat smaller capacity, the Optima D31M BlueTop battery should not be used while the engine is off as much as some other, larger, group 31 batteries.

Because of these features and acceptable price, the Optima D31M BlueTop battery is one of the most popular group 31 batteries on the market.

For more reviews and recommendations, feel free to check the Optima 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Battery Amazon link (link opens in the new window).

For a 10-liter diesel truck, the required cranking Amps can be significantly higher due to the large engine size and higher compression ratio typical of diesel engines.

Such trucks typically need between 1000 to 2000 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), especially in colder climates where starting the engine can be more challenging.

It's best to consult the truck's manufacturer specifications to get the exact requirements based on the specific model and operational conditions.

Are diesel trucks 12V or 24V vehicles?

Diesel trucks can be either 12V or 24V, depending on their design and intended use.

Generally, smaller or light-duty diesel trucks often use a 12V electrical system, similar to most passenger vehicles.

On the other hand, larger, heavy-duty diesel trucks and commercial vehicles typically use a 24V system to accommodate higher power requirements for starting and running heavy electrical loads.

The specific voltage system used by a diesel truck can usually be found in the vehicle’s manual or by consulting the manufacturer.

How to jump-start a diesel truck with two batteries connected in series (24V)?

Jump-starting a diesel truck with two batteries connected in series (24V system) requires careful steps to ensure safety and effectiveness:

  • Ensure Safety: Wear protective gear and check that both vehicles are off with keys removed.
  • Positioning: Position the assisting vehicle close enough for the jumper cables to reach but not touching the vehicle needing a jump.
  • Connecting Cables: Attach the positive (+) jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery in the assisting vehicle, then to the positive terminal of one of the batteries in the disabled truck. Connect the negative (-) cable to the negative terminal of the assisting vehicle's battery, and then to a solid, non-painted metal surface on the engine block or frame of the disabled truck.
  • Starting the Vehicle: Start the assisting vehicle, let it run for a few minutes, then try starting the disabled truck. If it doesn’t start, let it charge a bit longer before trying again.
  • Disconnecting Cables: Once started, disconnect the cables in reverse order.

Always consult your truck's manual for specific guidelines related to your vehicle.

Note: when jump-starting a truck, 12V or 24V, the burst of energy is insane, so be very very careful...

Also, 24V heavy-duty jump starters are rare, but if you do have a 24V vehicle, consider getting a 12V/24V or 24V heavy-duty jump-starter. Better safe, than sorry...

How long should batteries last on a diesel truck?

The lifespan of batteries in a diesel truck can vary, but typically, they last between 3 to 6 years.

This range is influenced by factors such as the truck's usage patterns, climate, maintenance of the battery, and the quality of the battery itself.

Frequent short trips, extreme temperatures, and poor maintenance can shorten the battery life.

On the other hand, regular checks and proper maintenance are essential for maximizing the battery's lifespan.

Few Final Words

These battery groups are the most common ones - other battery groups may be used as well, for example, large industrial group 4D, 6D, or even 8D batteries may be used as well for starting extra-large diesel engines.

Such batteries are heavy and difficult to work with, but there are some models that can easily provide 1500-2000 CCA Amps.

However, since smaller batteries are lighter and much easier to work with, large trucks often come with battery packs consisting of two or even more smaller batteries connected in parallel.

Vehicles that operate at 24V have battery packs consisting of batteries connected in series - such connections double the voltage, keeping the currents (and losses) at more acceptable levels.

Long Story Short: when replacing your old truck battery (or batteries), go for the same battery chemistry (lead-acid) and battery size. The new battery may have a slightly larger capacity and better CCA/MCA features than the old one, but it should not be weaker!

And whatever You do, stay safe - these batteries are able to provide insanely strong currents and may cause damage, injuries, or even something worse ...
