Most of these units are powered by two-stroke or four-stroke internal combustion engines in the 40-80cc range, having a power output in the 1.3-2.5 HP range.
Regardless of how small their engines are, 1000 Watt power generators must be operated outside since their fumes contain very toxic Carbon Monoxide (CO) - although these units are relatively simple to use and maintain, when they arrive, be sure to thoroughly read the manual in order to get accustomed to your new power generator and be sure to keep the Owner's Guide near the power generator, just in case.
Dual-fuel 1000 watt power generators are rare since such installation requires additional space, which is quite limited. Also, dual-fuel power generators need additional propane bottles which increase the storage requirements.
However, propane as fuel is greener fuel than gasoline (gas), it burns better, and is much easier to store for a longer period of time.
In order to increase fuel efficiency, most of the units feature variable speed engines with intelligent output voltage controllers (inverters!) which provide smooth and stable voltage with very low Total Harmonic Distortions (THD), allowing such units to power even very sensitive equipment.
Due to their very small dimensions and limited output power, the number of output ports (receptacles) is somewhat limited, when compared with larger units. Most of the 1000W power generators have 1-2 120V 15A 5-15R or 120V 20A 5-20R receptacles, sometimes combined with 12V DC and/or USB charging ports.
Runtime on a single fuel tank varies depending on the actual load, engine type, controller type, and similar, and it ranges from 3-4 hours @50% load to 9+ hours @50% load.
Noise levels are rather acceptable thanks to the fact that the engine power of these units is rather limited and that most of these units feature enclosed frame construction, further limiting the noise. Anything below 50 dB @25% from 23 feet (7m) distance is good, but there are models with even much better results. And yes, such units do cost more, but when lightly loaded, just a few feet away it is sometimes hard to tell if they are working or not, especially with the city noise in the background.
Safety features mostly include overload protection and in four-stroke models, low-oil automatic engine shut off.
Some high-end models also feature Carbon Monoxide detectors that monitor the amount of Carbon Monoxide in the air around the power generator and if required, automatically shut off the engine.
Parallel Ready power generators allow the user to connect two exactly the same or at least compatible units in parallel in order to increase the output power and allow the user to power larger loads.
What Can 1000 Watt Power Generator Run
Power generators can run several devices, gadgets, tools, or appliances whose combined power doesn't exceed the output power of the power generator.
Since 1000W power generators mostly feature 800-1000 Running Watts, the number of devices and appliances is limited, but it includes:
- smartphone, tablet, laptop, and similar chargers,
- home LED lights,
- battery chargers up to 500-700 VA, sometimes more,
- various TVs combined with multimedia devices,
- smaller appliances like smaller coffee makers, smaller microwave ovens, newer refrigerators, etc,
- smaller electric tools, like drills or saws.
Note: single 1000W power generator can power one smaller appliance/tool and perhaps one smaller load - this all depends on the actual power requirement of the appliance/tool.
The only way to accurately check power requirements of any device/appliance/tool is to check the documentation of the potential load and to write it down - make a list of the most required tools and appliances during a blackout, calculate total power requirement, increase it for 15-20% for safety reasons and You will get the minimum required output power of your new power generator.

Power Stations vs Power Generators
While power generators convert the chemical energy of the fossil fuel into electric energy using internal combustion engines, power stations convert the chemical energy of the lithium batteries directly into electrical energy, without releasing any fumes and dangerous gases. And they operate almost silently.
Also, power stations are much easier to maintain - recharge them every few months and they will do fine.
When their batteries are discharged, power stations can be recharged in few hours using solar panels, wall chargers, car chargers, and similar.
On the other hand, when power generators tanks are empty, they can be refilled within seconds.
Also, a power generator that can provide, for example, 400W for 8 hours is able to provide 3200Wh of energy.
On the other hand, power stations with 1000Wh or larger batteries tend to be more expensive.
So, which one is better, power station or power generator? Personally, power stations and power generators complement each other and in areas where blackouts are common, both power stations and power generators can come in very handy.

While 2-stroke engines are rather simple and use fuel:oil mix, 4-stroke engines are more fuel-efficient. If the power generator lacks a certain receptacle, various adapters can easily be found and ordered from online stores.
Although kind of smallish, 1000W power generators can provide strong currents that can make damage, injuries, or worse - when working with the power generators in general, not just 1000W units, be sure to stay safe and follow safety warnings provided by their manufacturers - read the Owner's Guide and keep it near the unit as future reference.
