Car Battery Weight: How Much Does A Car Battery Weigh?

Cars and other vehicles come in various sizes and types, so their batteries differ in size, type, chemistry, and a few more details, including, of course, their weight.

While car battery weight doesn't influence, at least not by much, the performances of most passenger cars, SUVs, RVs, and similar racing cars benefit from any weight savings. For this and many other reasons, people often ask how much a car battery weighs.

Car Battery Types and Group Sizes

The most common car battery types are lead-acid and lithium starting batteries, although vehicles with larger electric load (multimedia devices, winches, etc.) may have dual-purpose batteries.

Also, RV house batteries are almost exclusively deep-cycle batteries, but such batteries are not discussed in this article.

Car batteries differ in size, too, with the top 10 most popular car group battery sizes:

Of course, other battery groups are used as well, but not as often as these ones.

Note: these batteries are starting batteries in cars with internal combustion engines. Electric car batteries are discussed later in this article.

Car Battery Weight Chart

The following list shows the average car battery weight according to the car's battery size/group and chemistry:

Battery Size Lead-Acid Batteries Lithium Batteries
Group 24 Batteries 43-57 lbs; 19.5-25.8 kg 19-27 lbs; 8.6-12.2 kg
Group 34/78 Batteries 37-51 lbs; 16.8-23.1 kg -
Group 35 Batteries 31-50 lbs; 14-22.7 kg 13.5-16 lbs; 6.2-7.3 kg
Group 47 (H5, L2, 55L2) 39-41 lbs; 17.7-18.6 kg -
Group 48 (H6, L3, 66L3) 45-54 lbs; 20.4-24.5 kg -
Group 49 (H8, L5, 88L5) 57-63 lbs; 25.9-28.6 kg -
Group 51 and 51R 25-43 lbs; 11.4-19.5 kg -
Group 65 Batteries 45-57 lbs; 20.4-25.9 kg 26 lbs; 11.8 kg
Group 75 Batteries 33-46 lbs; 15-20.9 kg -
Group 94R Batteries 52-75 lbs; 23.6-34 kg 15.4-17.8 lbs; 7-8 kg

Unlike deep cycle lithium batteries which are very common in many battery sizes, lithium car batteries are still not as common as lead-acid batteries.

Also, as one can see, the weights of lead-acid batteries in some battery groups differ significantly since some batteries are designed as starting, some are designed as dual-purpose, and some are designed as deep-cycle batteries.

To check the weights of individual batteries, check the following comparison charts.

As one can see, Group 24 batteries are mostly deep-cycle and dual-purpose batteries used in cars with dual battery systems.

Group 24 batteries on average weigh 43-57 pounds (~19.5-25.8 kg) and are still mostly lead-acid batteries.

However, if you need a starting group 24 battery and you are unable to find one, consider getting a starting group 34 battery - they are smaller and lighter, but they are optimized for starting/cranking applications and can provide stronger currents than deep-cycle group 24 batteries.

Hybrid Car Battery Weights

Hybrid cars have at least two batteries, including one starting battery for the internal combustion engine and another for electric propulsion.

The size of the second battery depends on the type of hybrid car - standard hybrids also known as non-plug-in hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

Here's a list of some common standard hybrid vehicles along with the weight of their batteries:

  • Toyota Prius - One of the most recognized standard hybrids, the Toyota Prius uses a nickel-metal hydride battery that typically weighs around 80-100 kg, depending on the generation and specific model.
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid - This vehicle also uses a lithium-ion battery, similar to the Toyota Prius, with weights varying slightly based on specific model and year, generally within the 50-60 kg range.
  • Honda Civic Hybrid - Earlier models of the Honda Civic Hybrid used a nickel-metal hydride battery weighing about 45-50 kg, while later models switched to lighter lithium-ion batteries.
  • Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid - The Malibu Hybrid features a lithium-ion battery that weighs approximately 80 kg.

These weights are indicative and can vary slightly based on the specific year and model of the vehicle.

Here's a list of some popular plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) along with information about their battery weights where available:

  • Toyota Prius Prime - One of the most popular PHEVs, the Prius Prime uses a lithium-ion battery that typically weighs around 120 kg.
  • Chevrolet Volt - Another well-known PHEV, the Chevrolet Volt has a lithium-ion battery that weighs approximately 198 kg.
  • Ford Fusion Energi - This model also uses a lithium-ion battery, similar to the other vehicles on this list, with a weight of about 120 kg.
  • Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In - The Ioniq's battery pack is slightly lighter, around 100 kg.
  • BMW X5 xDrive45e - Known for its performance and luxury, this SUV’s lithium-ion battery weighs about 150 kg.
  • Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid - This plug-in hybrid minivan features a larger lithium-ion battery that weighs around 150 kg.

These weights give an idea of the substantial addition to the vehicle's total mass due to the battery, impacting factors like handling, fuel efficiency, and performance. Manufacturers have been working on optimizing battery weight to improve vehicle dynamics and efficiency.

Electric Car Battery Weighs

Here's a list of some of the most common electric cars along with the weight of their batteries:

  • Tesla Model S - The battery in the Tesla Model S weighs approximately 540 kg and has a capacity of 85 kWh.
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV - This model has a battery weight of 435 kg with a total capacity of 62.2 kWh.
  • Hyundai Kona Electric - The Hyundai Kona Electric features a battery weighing 452 kg and has a total capacity of 67.5 kWh.
  • Hyundai IONIQ Electric - The battery weight in the IONIQ Electric is about 359 kg for the version without a battery heater, with a total capacity of 40.4 kWh.
  • Kia e-Soul - The Kia e-Soul’s battery weighs 457 kg and has a similar capacity of 67.5 kWh.
  • Kia e-Niro - Like the e-Soul, the e-Niro’s battery also weighs 457 kg and has a capacity of 67.5 kWh.

The Rimac Nevera, a high-performance electric hypercar, is equipped with a battery that is notably substantial in both capacity and weight.

The battery pack has a capacity of 120 kWh and comprises 6,960 cells of the 21700 cylindrical type.

This battery is liquid-cooled and structured in a unique H-shape, which integrates with the vehicle's chassis to add structural stiffness and maintain a low center of gravity for optimal weight distribution and performance dynamics.

Specifically, the battery's considerable capacity contributes to the Nevera's exceptional performance specifications, such as its ability to produce 1.4 MW of power, equivalent to 1,914 horsepower.

The car's high-performance capabilities are supported by this powerful battery setup, enabling remarkable acceleration and speed metrics, such as a 0-100 km/h time of just 1.97 seconds and a top speed of 412 km/h.

Few Final Words

When weight savings can bring an increase in performance, switching from lead-acid to lithium batteries can save some weight.

For passenger, SUV, RVs, and similar vehicles, the weight of the battery is not that important, although it may be important when the battery has to be carried by an individual, especially for longer distances.
