How To Charge DeWalt 60V Batteries

Intro to DeWalt 60V Batteries

As their name suggests, DeWalt 20V/60V FLEXVOLT MAX batteries are compatible with:

  • all 20V MAX, 60V MAX, and 120V MAX tools,
  • all 20V MAX chargers.

As such, just a few DeWalt 20V/60V FLEXVOLT batteries can be used to power a broad set of tools, which can be purchased as a bare tool (tool-only) at a significantly lower price.

This also simplifies the transition from 20V MAX tools to 60V MAX tools, and especially 120V MAX tools that offer corded tools output power but freedom of cordless tools.

The transition from 60V to 20V and from 20V and 60V is automatic - when the battery is inserted into the tool, it automatically reconfigures itself.

For example, lithium-ion FLEXVOLT batteries generally feature 15 individual 3.6V cells which can be connected in:

  • parallel and series: 15 cells are connected in 3 groups of cells connected in series, after which they are all connected in parallel for a maximum voltage of 20V and a nominal voltage of 18V - configuration for 20V MAX tools.
  • series: all 15 cells are connected in series for a maximum voltage of 60V and a nominal voltage of 54V - configuration for 60V MAX tools.
  • two batteries in series: all 15 cells in each battery are connected in series (60V MAX, 54V nominal), and the batteries are connected in series (120V MAX voltage, 108V nominal) - configuration for 120V MAX tools.

When being used in different tools/voltages, one must also be aware of the battery/battery pack capacity. For example, DeWalt DCB606 battery features:

  • 20V MAX configuration: 20V 6.0Ah,
  • 60V MAX configuration: 60V 2.0Ah,
  • 120V MAX configuration: 120V 2.0Ah (two batteries!).

Note: when using two batteries for 120V MAX tools, it is highly recommended to use the batteries of the same capacity and remaining charge.

Thanks to such construction, only two batteries are enough to power 20V MAX, 60V MAX, and 120V MAX tools - such flexible voltage hence led to the name "FLEXVOLT."

DeWalt 60V batteries feature internal Battery Management Systems (BMS), which monitor the batteries and protect them from unwanted events.

These batteries feature a relatively low self-discharge rate and are very resilient to heat (they feature improved cooling), but it is highly recommended to recharge them as soon as they are fully discharged - just be sure to let them cool at least 10-15 minutes after use and after charging.

DeWalt 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries also feature battery charge monitors, allowing the users to check the battery's remaining capacity.

At the moment, most popular DeWalt 60V batteries are DeWalt DCB606, DeWalt DCB609, DeWalt DCB612 and DeWalt DCB615. Some of them are even offered in pairs and are labeled as DeWalt DCB606-2, DCB609-2 and similar.

Note: DeWalt also manufactures special versions of these batteries optimized for certain tasks and situations - not all of them are compatible with 20V/60V MAX tools.
