When and How to Replace Dyson V6 Battery
When Dyson introduced the Dyson V6 Cordless vacuum cleaner, it set some standards for cordless vacuums regarding maximum suction, air filtration, ease of use and maintenance, battery capacity, and similar.
Even today, with its 100 Air Watts suction in Maximum Suction Mode, Dyson V6 is comparable with many new models on the market. While the motor and other parts can operate for a long time, its lithium power fade-free battery often needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on the use. Here is how ...

Dyson V6 OEM Battery
All versions of Dyson V6 Cordless Vacuum, Dyson V6 Absolute, Dyson V6 Animal, Dyson V6 Motorhead, Dyson V6 Fluffy, Dyson V6 Slim, etc. feature power fade-free lithium battery consisting of 6 (six) 3.6V cells for a total of 21.6 volts and nominal capacity of 3.0 Ah (3000 mAh).
Dyson V6 Cordless Vacuum has been superseded by newer Dyson cordless vacuums, but it is still a good and rather versatile vacuum cleaner.
Note: battery cells are positioned in a single, flat row, one next to another, increasing the cooling surface. Also, battery cells are medium-capacity, high-discharge type of cells.
Such a battery features no memory effect and can be recharged using the original battery charge directly or while the unit is in the wall charging/storage dock.
Depending on the suction mode and used tool, the OEM Dyson V6 battery lasted from 6 minutes (Boost/Max. Suction Mode) to 20 minutes (Normal Suction Mode).
In order to prevent any safety or performance issues and in order to prolong its life, the Dyson V6 OEM battery comes with a Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the battery's parameters and prevents unwanted events, especially over-discharging and overcharging the battery.
Note: The Dyson V6 battery cannot be detached from the vacuum without using tools - a simple Phillips screwdriver is enough for such a task.
When to Replace Dyson V6 Battery
Brand new, fully charged Dyson V6 battery is able to power Dyson V6 for 6 to 20 minutes (mode and tool dependent), and it requires ~3.5 hours to get fully recharged.
When the Dyson V6 runtime noticeably drops, when the battery can't hold the charge, when charging time becomes much shorter (or longer), or when the battery's BMS signals battery error, it is probably time to replace the battery.
If the battery is within its warranty period, contact Dyson for a new replacement battery.
However, if the battery is out of its warranty period, consider buying a new OEM Dyson V6 battery and replacing the battery at home.
How to Replace Dyson V6 Battery
If the warranty period is over, order a new OEM battery and replace it at home.
The procedure is rather simple:
- Before replacing the battery, be sure that the unit is turned Off, the charger cable is unplugged, and the dirt bin is empty,
- remove the wand and dirt bin from the vacuum,
- Dyson V6 comes with the battery attached with two Phillips screws - one screw is in the rear of the handle and one on the front part of the battery,
- first, remove the screw from the rear of the handle,
- position the vacuum cleaner on a soft surface and remove the screw from the front of the battery
Note: although lithium batteries don't contain toxic metals like cadmium, lead, and/or mercury, they should be recycled properly.
- new Dyson V6 OEM battery comes with two Phillips screws required for fixing the battery,
- place the new battery into the handle, gently pushing it until it clicks into place, and secure it in place with the screws
- assemble the unit, including the dirt bin and perhaps the wand.
Note: for safety reasons, lithium batteries are transported in semi-charged condition - charge the new battery before the very first use.
The following YouTube video explains the procedure in greater detail:
OEM vs. Non-OEM Dyson V6 Batteries
Genuine/OEM Dyson V6 battery is not cheap - actually, it costs more than some complete cordless vacuums.
However, its price is such for a reason - the Dyson V6 battery comes with 6 balanced, medium-capacity, high-discharge current cells optimized for powering devices and appliances like the Dyson V6 cordless vacuum cleaner.
Also, it comes with a full Battery Management System that monitors the battery and protects it from unwanted events.
Non-OEM Dyson V6 batteries come with 1 (one) or even 2 (two) rows of lithium batteries and feature nominal capacity from 3 to 7 Ah (OEM battery features 3 Ah capacity) and cost far less than the OEM battery.
In theory, larger the capacity of the battery also means longer runtime, but in real life high-capacity cells often mean that such cells support low to medium-discharge currents.
And when such batteries must provide high discharge currents, their runtime and especially the number of charging and discharging cycles is reduced.
On top of that, high-capacity cells may draw extra current when charging, potentially overloading and overheating the battery charger.
Also, non-OEM battery packs with two rows of battery cells and even some battery packs with one row of cells do not fit the original charging/storage wall mount/dock.
And we didn't even touch the safety of non-OEM batteries and their built-in Battery Management Systems (BMSs), increased weight of the unit with a larger battery, etc.
For short, if possible, when replacing the Dyson V6 battery (outside of its warranty period), always go for the genuine Dyson V6 Battery (Amazon link, link opens in the new window), even if it costs more than non-OEM batteries.
But, if You, for whatever reason, decide to go for the non-OEM Dyson V6 battery, go for the model with many positive reviews - such batteries have been already tested by countless users in real-life situations, and if they were good for others, they may be good for You as well. But You do it on your own responsibility, not Dyson's or somebody else's ...
Also, if You are considering a new cordless vacuum, newer Dyson vacuums are not cheap (neither was the Dyson V6), but are top-of-the-line products, and some of the best cordless vacuums on the market (Amazon links, open in the new window):
