Battery Equivalents and Replacements

Dyson V8 Battery Replacement

Dyson V8 stick/handheld convertible vacuum cleaner is a robust and sturdy cordless vacuum that regularly outlasts its lithium, power fade-free battery.

During the warranty period, Dyson replaces the failing battery, but when the warranty period is over, Dyson V8 owners can replace the batteries, but they have to pay for it. And since the Dyson V8 battery is not cheap, many people wonder what their best option is...

Dyson V8 Battery

Dyson V8 battery is lithium, 21.6V (6 cells connected in series) power fade-free battery that is optimized for performance - Dyson V8 cordless vacuum cleaner can operate up to 40 minutes, and when in Boost Mode, it features suction of 115 Air Watts, which is comparable with many corded units.

Also, the Dyson V8 battery comes with the built-in Battery Management System, which monitors the parameters of the battery and prevents unwanted events that may harm the battery and its cells.

The battery is removable, but it is not detachable - the battery is firmly attached using three screws, and when needed, it can be removed, but it would be very unpractical to have two batteries and use them interchangeably.

Thus, the Dyson V8 battery is always charged while being attached to the Dyson V8 vacuum, most often in the vacuum's wall mount.

How To Replace Dyson V8 Battery?

When it is time to replace the battery, the simplest thing to do is to order a new battery from Dyson and replace it at home. It is a very simple task, as explained in this video:

The Dyson V8 battery replacement procedure is very simple:

  • remove three screws holding the battery attached to the handheld unit - one screw is above the charging port, the second and third screws are below the battery,
  • detach the old battery from the Dyson V8 vacuum,
  • place the new battery in its position,
  • screw back all three screws that hold the battery in its position.

And that would all - before the very first vacuuming task, be sure to recharge the new battery - for safety reasons, lithium batteries are transported in semi-charged condition.

Also, be sure to recycle the old battery properly.

OEM vs. Non-OEM Replacement Batteries

Original batteries are made to meet all specifications required by the devices using them, in this case, Dyson V8 cordless vacuums. However, OEM batteries, especially Dyson batteries, are not cheap.

non oem dyson v8 battery replacement

That is why some battery brands offer non-OEM Dyson V8 batteries - such batteries are cheaper, often have a larger capacity (6-7+ Ah) than the OEM batteries, etc.

But, lithium battery cells used in OEM Dyson V8 batteries are optimized for performance and not so much for capacity - when being discharged with strong currents (Boost Mode, for example), non-OEM battery cells may be discharged with currents that are not safe for such cells.

Also, it is questionable how many parameters their Battery Management Systems (BMSs) are monitoring.

On the other hand, such batteries may be 2-3x cheaper than the Dyson V8 OEM batteries, while non-OEM batteries with cells in 2 rows offer 2-3x larger capacity at the expense of the unit being heavier.

Long story short - despite the price difference, go for OEM batteries. Original Dyson V8 replacement batteries are not cheap, but at least You are sure that You are buying a safe battery.

Dyson V8 Battery Adapters

Dyson V8 battery adapters allow the users to power their Dyson V8 cordless vacuums using industrial batteries intended for cordless tools from brands like DeWalt, Milwaukee, and similar.

battery adapter

Such battery adapters allow users to power their Dyson V8 cordless vacuums using, for example, DeWalt 20V MAX 2.0Ah or 5.0Ah batteries. These are industrial, high-quality batteries that tolerate high discharge currents very well.

However, most such batteries feature a 5-cell design with a nominal battery voltage of 18V and a maximum charging voltage of ~20-21V.

In contrast, the OEM Dyson V8 battery features a nominal voltage of 21.6 volts - this voltage difference leads to a certain suction loss.

Also, DeWalt, Milwaukee, and other similar batteries must be recharged using their own battery chargers - the users can't simply place the Dyson V8 battery with the battery adapter and industrial battery on the wall mount for storage and charging.

If You consider a non-OEM Dyson V8 Battery (Amazon link, link opens in the new window), go for the models that have many positive reviews from users that have already tried the replacement battery in real-life situations.

Dyson V8 has been on the market for years, and it is still one of the most popular cordless units.

Also, if You are considering a new cordless vacuum, newer Dyson vacuums are not cheap (neither was the Dyson V6), but are top-of-the-line products, and some of the best cordless vacuums on the market (Amazon links, open in the new window):
