H5 vs. H6 Battery

The H5 battery, also known as the Group 47 battery, has a smaller physical size compared to the H6 battery, which is known as the Group 48 battery.

As a result of their size difference, H6 batteries typically offer a higher capacity and stronger CCA rating, meaning they can store more electrical energy and crank larger engines than H5 batteries.

H5 vs. H6 Battery Dimensions

The main difference between group 47/H5 batteries and group 48/H6 batteries are their dimensions (L x W x H):

  • Group 47/H5 Battery Size: 9 9/16 x 6 15/16 x 7 1/2 inches (9.5625 x 6.9375 x 7.5 inches, 242 x 175 x 190 mm),
  • Group 48/H6 Battery Size: 11 x 6 15/16 x 7 1/2 inches (11 x 6.9375 x 7.5 inches, 278 x 175 x 190 mm).

Note: some sources claim the width of group 47/H5 and 48/H6 batteries as 6 7/8 and not 6 15/16, which would be a closer match to the H5/H6 battery width of 175 mm, but the difference between 6 7/8 and 6 15/16 inches is so small that it is practically negligible.

As one can see, battery groups 47/H5 and 48/H6 have the same width and height, but they differ in length by 36 mm (~1.42 inches) - due to this difference in size, group 48/H6 batteries feature larger internal volume, and thus larger capacity, longer RC value, better CCA ratings, etc. But, they are also somewhat heavier and more expensive.

Most group 47/H5 and 48/H6 batteries are either starting or dual-purpose AGM lead-acid batteries designed as SLI (Starting, Light, and Ignition) batteries.

To help with the ever-increasing demand for electricity, especially when the engine is off, most car H5/H6 batteries are designed to tolerate being regularly discharged but not too deep.

Also, Start and Stop systems require car H5/H6 batteries to work hard, especially in towns and cities, where traffic lights and jams force drivers to stop their vehicles often.

H5 vs. H6 Battery Capacity, CCA, RC, and Weight

Due to the difference in the batteries' sizes, their capacity, CCA, RC, and weight differ.

  • Capacity: Generally, group H6 batteries feature a battery capacity of ~69-72Ah, and group H5 batteries around 60Ah.
  • CCA/MCA: Group H6 batteries feature a CCA rating of 725-800 Amps and an MCA rating of 825-925 Amps, while group H5 batteries feature a CCA rating of 600-650 Amps and an MCA rating of 690-800 Amps.
  • RC: Group H6 batteries feature Reserve Capacity rating of 120-140 minutes, while group H5 batteries feature an RC rating of 100-115 minutes.
  • Weight: Group H6 AGM batteries weigh around 45-54 pounds, while group H5 batteries feature a weight of 39-41 pounds.

Note: Lithium group 47/H5 and 48/H6 batteries are not as common as lead-acid batteries.

Which One is Better: H5 or H6 Battery?

Personally, it is unfair to say "which one is better" when comparing the batteries of different sizes - the H6 battery is larger and thus has a larger internal volume, allowing the manufacturers to fit more battery plates and electrolytes.

Thus, H6 batteries are heavier but have a larger capacity, stronger CCA/MCA ratings, and longer RC values. Generally, they also cost slightly more.

Note: Both H5 and H6 batteries have positive battery terminals on the right side of the batteries and very similar/same hold-down systems.

Thus, if your battery compartment can accept both of these batteries and there are no issues regarding the battery's hold-down system, vehicle charging system, battery cables, etc., it is possible to replace the old H5 battery with a new H6 battery. But, just in case, check your vehicle's Owner's Guide regarding supported battery sizes - better safe than sorry...
