Features and Specifications
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a very lightweight battery starter - the unit alone weighs 1.65 pounds (~0.75 kg) and with clamps and all accessories, it weighs 2.4 pounds (~1.1 kg).
Internal battery features 24 Wh (watt-hour) capacity, allowing the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 to provide up to 1000 Amps (12V systems), making it suitable for starting up to 6-liter gas and 3-liter diesel internal engines - most cars, trucks, boats, tractors, RVs, etc.
Physical dimensions of the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 are (L x W x H) 7.7/6.6 x 3.2 x 1.7 inches (~196/167 x 80 x 44 mm) - it can't fit most pockets, but it can easily fit in the backpack, for example.
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 features a rugged and water-resistant enclosure rated at IP65 - it can withstand rain and some water splashes, but it should not be submerged!
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is intended for providing large currents for a very short period of time and thus, it comes with very important safety features, including spark-proof technology and reverse polarity protection.
The unit is able to detect deeply discharged lead-acid batteries, discharged even down to 2V(!), and successfully start the main engine.
However, if the battery is discharged even below 2V (cell reversal?!), NOCO Boost Plus GB40 will not start the engine UNLESS the user manually overrides the battery detection - this override also disables safety features and it is very important to emphasize that this should be done only in an absolute emergency and only by users that know what they are doing. If not, wait for the help.
Note: NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a very user-friendly battery starter, but when it comes, be sure to thoroughly read the instructions. Also, it is good practice to keep the instructions in the transport bag.
When the unit arrives, the box contains a NOCO Boost Plus GB40 battery starter, battery clamps, 12-Volt car charger, micro USB charging cable, microfiber storage bag, and a very important User Guide.
Using any 2.1 Amps USB port, the unit can be fully recharged in ~3 hours.
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a multi-function device - it is a battery starter, USB charger, and emergency flashlight.
Personally, the only thing worse than not having a car battery jump starter in an emergency is having discharged car battery jump starter in an emergency - NOCO Boost Plus GB40 should be used for charging smartphones only in emergencies (charge it to dial a 911 and not more!), while the integrated flashlight should be used only to be able to connect the battery clamps to the battery in pitch dark situations and to signal for help.
After all, its integrated 100-lumen LED flashlight features seven light modes, including emergency strobe and SOS.
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 comes with a 1-year warranty.
How to Use NOCO Boost Plus GB40
NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a very user-friendly unit, especially if you go through its manual several times and use it or any similar device for few times :)
Seriously, NOCO Boost Plus GB40 should be used only for starting ONLY 12V lead-acid batteries, if supported by the car manufacturer. For systems with negative ground systems (most of the cars, boats, trucks ...), the procedure is as follows:
- connect the battery clamps to the 12V OUT port,
- connect the positive (red) battery clamp to the positive '+' battery terminal,
- connect the negative (black) battery clamp to the negative '-' battery terminal,
- be sure that all the loads on the car are turned off (lights, radio, etc.),
- press the Power Button on the battery starter - if the connection is OK, all the LEDs will flash, if not, the Red Error LED will turn ON. Wait for the White Boost LED to be illuminated and start the engine.
After starting the vehicle, disconnect the negative and then positive battery clamp and recharge the battery starter as soon as possible.
Note: this procedure is described in greater detail in the Owner's Manual, so always keep it with the starter.
How to Recharge NOCO Boost Plus GB40
Recharging is very similar - locate the input USB port and connect it to any USB charging port found on the laptops, wall USB chargers, car charging adapters, and similar.
Since the battery is able to store 24Wh of energy, fully discharged NOCO Boost Plus GB40 takes about three hours to recharge completely using a 2.1A USB charging port.
Personally, keep the battery fully charged, especially when going off-the-grid - recharge the battery after each use of the unit, even if it was used as an LED flashlight. Better safe than sorry.
Long Story Short: NOCO Boost Plus GB40 is a lightweight and compact battery starter, not very appreciated until one needs it - after that, it becomes one of the essential items carried on fishing trips, camping, long journeys, and similar.
Just be sure to keep it charged and the Owner's Manual in its carrying bag.
