Streamlight 44931 Siege LED Lantern Flashlight Features and Specifications
Streamlight 44931 Siege features physical dimensions of (base diameter x height) 3.8 x 7.25 inches (9.65 x 18.41 cm), and it weighs 1 lb 15 oz (878 grams) with batteries, which are NOT included by default.
The lantern is powered by 3 (three) 1.5V D-cell batteries, with alkaline batteries being recommended.
Note: using D-cell batteries with a voltage higher than 1.5V may damage the unit.
As light sources, Streamlight 44931 Siege uses 4 (four) white C4 LEDs and 1 (one) red C4 LED.
Streamlight 44931 Siege supports the following light modes:
- White light: High, 540 lumens, 30 hours,
- White light: Medium, 275 lumens, 70 hours,
- White light: Low, 55 lumens, 295 hours,
- Red light: 10 lumens, 235 hours,
- SOS red light: 10 lumens, 430 hours.
Red light is often used to protect night vision, especially during camping, fishing, hunting, in emergencies, and similar.
Changing from red to light and back is very simple - press and hold the recessed On/Off button for two seconds until the light changes color. After the light color changes, release the On/Off button.
Changing between light modes is done by pressing the On/Off button quickly - one has to go through all the light levels (single color) to turn the lantern Off.
Note: waiting more than two seconds between button pushes will also turn the lantern off with the next press of the On/Off button.
Also, the On/Off button features a batteries indicator - it changes from green to yellow and red, and when the batteries are almost completely discharged, the battery indicator turns to a flashing red light.
The glare-reducing polycarbonate cover is removable, allowing the user to hang the flashlight and cover 360° with light.
The body of the flashlight is made of tough polycarbonate thermoplastic with elastomer over mold, ensuring a 2m impact height.
Also, the lantern is designed to float when in water, but nonetheless, it can withstand 1m submersion (IPX7 rating).
Both top and bottom of the flashlight feature spring-loaded D-rings, allowing the user to hang the lantern in upside and upside-down positions.
An ergonomic handle helps with carrying the unit around and also allows the user to hang it by the handle as well.
The lantern's base is made of molded rubber, providing stability on slippery and uneven surfaces.
Also, the keyed battery door is designed to help with battery replacement, even in dark and low-light conditions.
To help the lantern stick to metal surfaces, Streamlight 44952 Magnetic Siege Base (Amazon link, link opens in the new window) can be purchased separately - it allows the user to firmly attach the lantern to various metal surfaces like cars, doors, refrigerators, etc., practically any surface made of iron/steel.
Streamlight 44931 Siege LED lantern flashlight comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
3x D-Cell vs. 9x AA Batteries
Streamlight 44931 Siege LED lantern flashlight is powered by 3 D-cell batteries that are rather common but not as common as AA batteries.
In theory, using 3 (three) 3xAA batteries to D-cell battery adapters, one may power Streamlight 44931 Siege LED lantern flashlight with AA batteries and not with D-cell batteries.
This way, one can replace 3 alkaline D-cells with 9 alkaline AA cells, just be aware that the capacity of 3 AA cells is smaller than the capacity of a single D-cell, thus shortening the runtime in all light modes.
Note: this is not an official recommendation, and it is not officially supported by Streamlight! If something goes wrong, it is the user's responsibility, not ours, and definitely not Streamlight's.
Long Story Short: Streamlight 44931 Siege is a very popular LED lantern flashlight thanks to its design, durable construction, wide range of features, acceptable price, etc.
It can be used in many situations, including camping, fishing, hunting, during blackouts, and similar.
When high-quality alkaline D-cell batteries are used, Streamlight 44931 Siege can be stored for years and then be used at the moment of notice.
Note that Streamlight also manufactures very similar rechargeable LED lantern flashlights (Streamlight 44947 Super Siege) with a maximum output of respectable 1100 lumens, so choose according to your own needs and preferences.
Personally, if You use LED lanterns often, go for the rechargeable (Streamlight 44947 Super Siege) model, if not, go for the non-rechargeable (Streamlight 44931 Siege) model.
