Renogy 1000W 12V Power Inverter: Model R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US

At the moment, Renogy offers two 12V 1000W power inverters:

  • Model R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US with Eco Mode (newer model),
  • Model RNG-INVT-1000-12V-P2-US (older model).

This article is about the newer Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter (Model R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US with Eco Mode) - later in this article, we will compare these two models.

Renogy 12V 1000W R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US power inverter is a DC-to-AC power inverter featuring 11-15V nominal input voltage and providing 110V±10% AC output voltage with 50Hz or 60Hz frequency - output frequency can be set using dip switch on the back side of the unit (for the US, set it to 60Hz).

Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter output is a "pure" sine wave with very low THD%, less than 3% for linear loads and less than 5% for non-linear loads.

Maximum continuous output power is 1000W, with a maximum surge power of 2000.

Note: if your power inverter is continuously loaded around 70% or more, consider a larger unit, for example, Renogy 12V 2000W Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter (Amazon link, link opens in the new window).

The physical dimensions of the Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter are (L x W x H) 13.4 x 7.6 x 2.8 inches (340 x 193 x 71 mm), and it weighs 7.5 pounds (3.4 kg).

The energy efficiency of the unit is >90%, ensuring low energy losses and less dissipated heat - just in case, the power inverter comes with thermally controlled cooling fans.

When the unit is idle, the battery current draw is <1 Amp when the ECO mode is turned Off via the dip switch in the back of the unit.

When the ECO mode is turned ON, the unit goes into standby mode when it detects a load of less than 50 Watts.

During standby mode, the unit sends power to the AC port every 2-3 seconds and tries to detect a load greater than 50W - when detected, the unit "wakes up" from the standby mode and resumes normal operation.

Note: Personally, the ECO mode can come in handy in many situations, but the Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter also comes with Remote Controller (16.4 feet/5m long cable), allowing the user to remotely turn the inverter On/Off. Also, the unit comes with 4 AWG wires, which could be thicker (2 AWG, for example), since at 1000W and 12V unit draws ≥90 Amps and ≥180 Amps during a 2000W power surge!

The operating temperature of the unit is -4°F to 158°F (-20°C to +70°C) - the unit should be placed in a permanent, well-ventilated area, as close to the batteries as possible.

Also, the disconnect high voltage is 15.5V±0.5V, the battery alarm low voltage is 10.5V±0.5V, and the low shutdown voltage is 10.0V±0.5V - unit can be powered using either deep-cycle lead-acid or deep-cycle lithium batteries.

The rear side of the power inverter features:

  • Positive (Red) and Negative (Black) connection ports,
  • Cooling Fans (2x).

The front side of the unit features:

  • One AC GFCI 120V power outlet,
  • AC Terminal Block (covered),
  • DIP switches (ECO mode, Frequency),
  • Remote Controller Port,
  • RS485 Communication Port,
  • Status LEDs,
  • On/Off Power Button.

Note: RS485 communication port accepts Renogy BT-2 Bluetooth Module (Amazon link, link opens in the new window), ensuring the users to access the real-time and historical data via Renogy DC Home App and a smartphone.

Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter, Model R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US, comes with a 1-year limited warranty.

Renogy 12V 1000W Power Inverters: Model R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US with Eco Mode (newer model) vs. Model RNG-INVT-1000-12V-P2-US (older model)

Renogy 12V 1000W R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US power inverter (newer) and Renogy 12V 1000W RNG-INVT-1000-12V-P2-US power inverter (older)are two very similar models that differ in a few very important details:

older model

  • The newer (ECO Mode) model features one 120V AC outlet, the older model comes with two 120V AC outlets,
  • The newer (ECO Mode) model features ECO mode and frequency (50Hz/60Hz) DIP switches, the older model doesn't feature ECO mode and operates only at 60Hz±0.1Hz,
  • The newer (ECO Mode) model comes with an RS485 communication port,
  • The older model features a USB 5.0V 2.1A charging port,
  • The newer (ECO Mode) comes with a 16.4 ft long Remote Controller cable, while the older model comes with a 19.8 ft Remote Controller cable.
  • The newer (ECO Mode) model is heavier (7.5 vs. 6.0 pounds).

Other than that, both units feature energy efficiency of >90%, very low THD levels, AC terminal block, thermally controlled cooling fans, etc.

The older Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter is one of the most popular units in its class on the market, with newer model gaining in popularity - if You don't need ECO mode and/or RS485 communication port, the older model is somewhat cheaper, and still used and purchased by many users.

Recommended Battery for Renogy 12V 1000W Power Inverter

With its 90% efficiency, 12V input voltage, 1000W nominal watts, and 2000W surge watts, the Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter needs a battery that is able to provide continuously at least:

PBat(W) = 1000W / 0.9 = 1111 Watts

IBat(A) = 1111W / 12V = ~92.6 Amps

Or when there is a 2000W power surge:

PBat(W) = 2000W / 0.9 = 2222 Watts

IBat(A) = 2222W / 12V = ~185.2 Amps

Note: since actual voltage may drop down to 10.5V, actual maximum currents are up to ~105A for maximum continuous power and ~210 Amps for surge power.

Personally, the smallest batteries used to power 12V 1000W power inverter are deep cycle group 31 batteries with a nominal capacity of 100Ah, or preferably deep cycle group 4D/8D batteries with a nominal capacity of 180+ Ah.

Due to the capacity loss of lead-acid batteries when being discharged using strong currents, for example, UPG 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle group 31 battery can provide 100 Amps only for ~30 minutes (down to ~10.5V), while UPG 12V 75Ah Deep Cycle group 24 battery can provide 100 Ams only for ~15 minutes (down to ~10.8V).

On the other hand, for example, Renogy 12V 200Ah AGM Deep Cycle Battery (Amazon link, link opens in the new window) can provide 110 Amps for 60 minutes (down to 10.5 volts).

On the other hand, lithium batteries don't suffer from capacity loss (down to 1.0C discharge current), but since they feature built-in BMS that protects the batteries from unwanted events, overcurrent being one of them, lithium batteries must feature dischrge current of 100A or more with a surge power of 200A or more.

Thus, if You are looking for a lithium battery for a Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter, go for 100Ah or preferably a larger 12V lithium battery (200+ Ah).

renogy 1000w inverter eco mLong Story Short: When compared with the older Renogy 12V 1000W power inverter, the newer Renogy 12V 1000W R-INVT-PGH1-10111S-US power inverter lacks a second 120V AC port and USV charging port, but it comes with a new ECO mode, 50/60 Hz operation, and support for RS485 communication port.

If You are looking for a new pure sine wave 12V 1000W power inverter, consider this model.
