Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM and Gel Batteries

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM and Gel batteries are two very similar models of non-spillable, sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries, differing in electrolyte, size, terminals and few more details.

Although these two batteries are intended for general use and can be even used interchangeably, it is important to know their differences and avoid confusion and potential power issues.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM and Gel Batteries Features and Specifications

The most important difference between these batteries is type of electrolyte - Weize 12V 100Ah AGM is Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) type of battery, while Weize 12V 100Ah Pure Gel battery uses gel form of electrolyte.

Both types are non-spillable, maintenance free batteries that may be connected in parallel and series in order to create battery packs with both larger capacities and voltages - but NOT with one another!

Note: This is very important - if you plan on making lead-acid battery pack consisting of 2 or more batteries, always use the same battery model from the same manufacturer, preferably from the same batch! Due to the small changes in voltages between wet, AGM and Gel cell lead-acid batteries, different batteries should NOT be used!

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM battery features physical dimensions of 12.09 x 6.65 x 8.31 (9.17 terminals) inches (30.7 x 16.9 x 21.1/23.3 cm) and belong to the BCI Battery Group 31 - it is very close to the BCI Battery Group 27, but the terminals are little bit too tall.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM battery weighs 60 pounds (~27.2 kg) and although it comes with built-in carrying handle/straps, it should not be carried to the longer distances by one adult.

Nominal voltage of this battery is 12 volts and declared capacity is 100Ah for 10h - that would be 10 Amps for 10 hours. Personally, when comparing this battery with the Gel model, actual capacity is more ~100Ah for 20h and perhaps ~94-96 Ah for 10h.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM battery is intended for both standby and deep cycle applications - it is a true deep cycle battery and it should NOT be used as starting/cranking battery, except perhaps for really small internal combustion engines whose starters require less than 100 Amps or similar.

When used in cyclic applications, charging voltage should be kept in the 14.50-14.90 volts range and when used in standby applications, charging voltage should be kept around 13.50 and 13.80 volts.

Regardless of the use, charging current should be kept below 30 Amps.

Its calcium-lead alloy grid ensure low self-discharge rate and long service life, as long as the battery is not discharged deeply too often - it has good recovery characteristics and it is true deep discharge battery, but the actual number of cycles may be significantly increased as long as the battery is NOT discharged below 50% DoD and especially if not below 80% DoD.

This battery is general purpose AGM, maintenance free battery, intended for broad range of applications like sump pump battery, trolling motor battery, golf cart battery, wheelchair battery, RV house battery etc.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Pure Gel battery is very similar to the AGM model. Its physical dimensions are 12.8 x 6.8 x 8.5 inches (32.5 x 17.3 x 21.6 cm) and it also belong to the BCI Battery Group 31 - it is little bit longer and wider, but also somewhat lower than AGM model.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Gel battery weighs 67 pounds (~30.4 kg), which is some 7 pounds heavier than AGM model.

Nominal voltage of this battery is also 12 volts and declared capacity is 100Ah for 10h. Since constant current discharge rate for 10h for Gel model is 9.47 Amps down to 10.5 volts, this battery also feature actual 20h capacity of ~100 Ah and 10h capacity of some 94-95 Ah.

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Gel battery is also intended for both standby and deep cycle applications. Since it is Gel type of battery, it can't provide currents like its AGM counterpart and it should definitely NOT be used as starting/cranking battery.

Regardless of the use, charging current should be kept below 20 Amps, which is 50% less than 30 Amps for AGM model!

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Gel also features calcium-lead alloy grid which ensures low self-discharge rate and long service life even longer than AGM model - on average, Gel lead-acid models can withstand 50-100% more charging and discharging cycles than their AGM counterparts, but their charging and discharging currents should be kept lower (some 50% lower is a good measure).

Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Gel battery features T9 terminals. When the battery is fully charged, its internal resistance is ~5.8 mΩ, measured at 77°F (25°C). When the battery is fully charged, it remaining capacity at 77°F (25°C) is 95% after 3 months, 88% after 6 months and 75% after 12 months, which is much better than AGM model's self-discharge rate of some 3% per month (which is good self-discharge rate for AGM battery!).

As one can see, this Gel-cell battery is general purpose, maintenance free battery, intended for variuos applications requiring reliable source of power like sump pumps, smaller trolling motors, wheelchairs (if the battery can fit the battery compartment), RV house battery etc.

Long Story Short: Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM and Weize 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Gel are two deep cycle sealed lead acid batteries intended for either standby or cycle applications and should not be used as starting batteries, especially not the Gel model.

AGM model is able to provide slightly stronger currents without adverse effects (50-100 Amps) and may be recharged faster (up to 30 Amps charging current), but AGM model also tolerates less charging/discharging cycles and has somewhat shorter expected standby life.

Gel battery should be used for currents up to 30-50 Amps, preferably less. It is intended for slower charging (up to 20 Amps charging current) and for slow discharging, for example 5-10 Amps during the night in off-the-grid solar applications.
