YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries Features and Specifications
YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries feature physical dimensions of (L x H x H) 5.25 x 3.5 x 6.5625 inches (134 x 89 x 166 mm) with a nominal voltage of 12V, a typical 10h capacity of 12Ah, and a typical CCA value of ~210 Amps.
The only actual difference between YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries is the orientation of their nuts&bolts battery terminals - YTX14AH-BS batteries feature a positive battery terminal on the left side of the battery, while YTX14AHL-BS batteries feature a positive battery terminal on the right side of the battery (negative port is on the Left, hence the "L" in the YTX14AHL label).
The typical weight of the lead-acid YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries is between 9 and 11 pounds (~4-5 kg).
Note: Lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are not present on the market in larger numbers, at least not yet.
Most lead-acid YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) maintenance-free, spill-proof batteries that can operate in any position (except upside-down) and have increased tolerances to vibrations, mechanical impacts, heat, and cold and deep discharges.
While most AGM batteries are delivered with the electrolyte already in the batteries, some brands deliver their AGM batteries in dry condition - it is up to the users to fill the batteries with the electrolyte.
Filling the batteries with electrolyte is not a complex thing to do, but one must be very careful - before doing it, be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.
One of the reasons why batteries are delivered in dry condition is that their shelf life is much longer than the shelf life of other batteries, without the danger of self-discharge - after filling them with electrolyte, these batteries are sealed and become maintenance-free and spill-proof batteries.
One of the brands that still deliver dry AGM batteries is - Yuasa, a very popular and reputable brand!
Note: although AGM and Gel-Cell batteries are generally more tolerant to deep discharges than flooded/wet lead-acid batteries, these batteries are designed as starting batteries, and as such, they should be used.
In order to improve certain features, some YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries come with lead-calcium plates - if You are going to charge these batteries using an advanced battery charger, feel free to set the battery type to "AGM" or "Calcium", depending on the required charging voltage of the battery and end-charging voltage of the battery charger that You have.
YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries Cross Reference Chart
When looking for a new YTX14AH-BS or YTX14AHL-BS battery, be sure to go for a battery of the same chemistry and size - YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries differ only in battery terminals orientation, but not all battery compartments intended for one of these batteries can accept the other one due to the limited length of battery cables.
Fortunately, many brands manufacture both versions of the battery, both YTX14AH-BS battery and YTX14AHL-BS battery.

As one can see, YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are rather evenly matched among the most popular brands, however, there are several brands that stand out: Weize, Chrome (brands Crome, Pirate, Zipp), Mighty Max, Interstate, Yuasa, Energizer, etc. So, if You are looking for a new YTX14AH-BS or YTX14AHL-BS battery to buy, consider these brands first.
But, other brands manufacture good batteries, just be sure to check the reviews of the users that have already tried and tested their batteries.
YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries As Deep Cycle Batteries
YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are NOT intended for deep cycle applications, but if You need a small 12V lead-acid battery and You don't intend to discharge it below 50% DoD (80% DoD, max.), feel free to use YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS AGM batteries - just a few charging/discharging cycles down to 50% DoD will not cause (almost) any harm.
Note: AGM lead-acid batteries are very robust batteries with an Absorbent Glass Mat between the plates, providing additional protection from short-circuiting the cells due to the growth of lead-phosphate crystals and warping the plates.
But, if You intend to use them often in deep cycle applications, consider getting general purpose/deep cycle AGM or lithium 12V 12Ah or 12V 18Ah batteries, and use your YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries only as starting/cranking batteries.
How to Prolong YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries Life?
Just like any other Powersports batteries, YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are sensitive to overcharging, over-discharging, heat, cold, vibrations, mechanical impacts, etc.
But, in order to prolong their lifetime, be sure to strap them firmly in their positions, be sure to avoid leaving your vehicle in the sun during the summer heat, check if the vehicle has a strong parasite current (these are relatively small batteries and even a small parasite current can discharge them rather quickly) and if does, disconnect the battery when storing the vehicle for longer than a week, for example.
Also, when recharging them and maintaining them, always use battery chargers/maintainers with temperature compensation, etc.
Most YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries come with 1-2 year warranties, but when maintained properly, batteries from more reputable brands should last at least 3-4 years/seasons.
How to Charge YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries?
Since the 10h capacity of YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries is ~12Ah, their charging current should be around 1.2 Amps - most 1-1.5 Amps intelligent AGM battery chargers will do just fine.
Advanced battery chargers should have temperature probes to prevent undercharging and overcharging the batteries in winter and summer.
Also, after fully recharging the batteries, such battery chargers automatically switch to maintenance mode, keeping the battery fully charged over a longer period of time.
Some of the most popular battery chargers in this class are (Amazon affiliate links, open in the new window):
- NOCO Genius1 1A 6V/12V Lead-Acid and 12V Lithium Battery Charger
- NOCO Genius2 2A 6V/12V Lead-Acid and 12V Lithium Battery Charger
But there are other good battery chargers on the market as well.
Lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS Batteries
Lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are not as common as lead-acid SLA batteries, but they offer weight savings of 7-8 pounds (~3.1-3.6 kg), lower self-discharge rate, faster recharge, and they tolerate deep discharges much better.
Lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries can be found as Lithium-Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries - regardless of the exact lithium chemistry, these batteries are protected by the built-in Battery Management Systems (BMS) that monitor battery condition and if necessary, protect the battery from unwanted events by disconnecting the battery.
However, lithium batteries usually feature lower capacity and are more sensitive to charging and discharging conditions, especially low temperatures. And they generally cost more.
Personally, AGM and Gel-cell YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are battery technologies used for many years and have been already tried and tested by countless users - unless you have very special reason to go after lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS battery, choose a good AGM or Gel-cell lithium YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS battery.
Long Story Short: YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries are mostly AGM lead-acid batteries, designed as starting batteries being able to deliver ~210 CCA from the new, fully charged battery.
The only difference between YTX14AH-BS and YTX14AHL-BS batteries is the battery terminal orientation, with other features being practically the same.
