OCELL 48V 40Ah LiFePO4 Battery Features and Specifications

OCELL 48V 40Ah battery features physical dimensions of (L x W x H) 13.6 x 6.1 x 10.6 inches (345 x 155 x 270 mm), and it weighs ~44 pounds (~20 kg).

The battery's nominal voltage is 51.2V, and thanks to the capacity of 40Ah, the battery is able to store effectively ~1800-2000Wh, depending on the discharge current and the battery temperature, and its general condition.

The battery is protected by the built-in Battery Management System that protects the battery from unwanted events, including overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, and short circuit.

Also, the battery features a low self-discharge rate of ~3% per month.

The maximum allowed constant discharge current is 80A (2C), allowing a single battery to power loads up to ~3800-4000W - this is excellent output power for such a battery; use it, but don't abuse it!

The maximum recommended charging current is 20A, although some resources claim 80A as the maximum charging current.

Since this battery is also offered as a bundle with 5A 58.4V lithium battery charger, we really believe that the maximum charging current should be kept below 20A for a single battery - better safe than sorry.

Example:

If the OCELL 48V 40Ah battery was discharged down to 80% DoD, the 5A battery charger takes ~6.5-7 hours to fully recharge the battery without overstressing it.

20A battery charger would recharge such battery in under 2h - excellent charging time. However, the manufacturer doesn't provide charts/graphs on how such charging current influences the battery's longevity.

OCELL 48V 40Ah battery is a true maintenance-free battery that can be mounted in any position, making it suitable for use as a trolling battery, golf cart battery, power inverter battery, RV battery, etc.

Thanks to the advanced BMS, OCELL 48V 40Ah battery can be connected in parallel and series - it is one of the rare lithium 48V batteries that officially supports connecting in series.

But, it is allowed only to use up to 4 batteries.

Example:

If four (4) batteries are connected in 4P configuration, the newly created battery pack features:

  • nominal voltage of 51.2V,
  • capacity of 160Ah,
  • max. continuous discharge current of 320A,
  • max. output power up to 14-16kW, etc.

Note: to avoid BMS disconnecting the batteries (too often), don't load Lithium Iron Phosphate in general with more than 60-70% of their maximum power output. In this case, don't load a single OCELL 48V 40Ah battery with more than 2.0-2.5 kW and 8.0-10.0 kW. Just my 2c.

If four (4) batteries are connected in 2S2P configuration, the newly created battery pack features:

  • nominal voltage of 102.4V,
  • capacity of 80Ah,
  • max. continuous discharge current of 160A,
  • max. output power up to 14-16kW.

Note: 51.2V is a serious voltage, and 102.4V is a deadly voltage - whatever you do, safety first!

How To Charge OCELL 48V 40Ah Battery?

As said before, the OCELL 48V 40Ah battery can be purchased as "battery only" or in a bundle with a 5A lithium battery charger.

Maximum charging current should be kept below 20A, allowing the user to recharge the battery in under two (2) hours.

Personally, if you have just one OCELL 48V 40Ah battery, go for a dedicated 5A 58.4V battery charger and enjoy your off-the-grid freedom.

On the other hand, if you plan on connecting two or more OCELL 48V 40Ah batteries in parallel, go for industry class NOCO Genius GX4820 48-Volt 20 Amp Smart Onboard Battery Charger/Maintainer (Amazon link, opens in the new window), which can be used to charge and maintain other battery chemistries as well.

Also, depending on your need, this battery charger supports the use of a broad set of accessories (some must be purchased individually!), including GCP AC Port Plugs, Anderson SB Connectors, Club Car 3-Pin Round Plug Connector, EZ-GO 3-Pin Triangle Plug Connector, EZ-GO Powerwise D-Plug Connector, Yamaha 2-Pin Plug Connector, and AC Cables for United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Australia.

However, this is not a cheap charger (and neither are lithium 48V batteries!), but if you are going to charge, for example, three (3) OCELL 48V 40Ah batteries discharged down to 80% DoD, using a NOCO GX4820 battery charger, the charger will recharge the batteries in ~5-5.5h, which is the excellent charging time for the battery pack storing ~6.1 kW of energy.

If you are looking for a dedicated 48V lithium battery charger, there are some cheaper chargers with fewer options - just be sure that the charger is intended for lithium 48/51.2V batteries, that the charging current is strong enough and that it has all the cables required.

OCELL 48V 40Ah Battery As Power Inverter Battery

Single OCELL 48V 40Ah battery features a nominal voltage of 51.2V and maximum discharge current of 80 Amps, allowing it to power loads up to 3.8-4.0 kW max.

To protect the battery, aim for a load that is up to 60-70% of its nominal load, which would be 2.4-2.8 kW.

With such maximum load, a single OCELL 48V 40Ah battery can power 2.4-2.8 kW of power inverter surge power and 1.2-1.4 kW running (continuous) power, making a single battery suitable for power inverters in the 1.0-1.2kW range (2.0-2.4kW surge).

Note: this doesn't sound as much as this, and similar batteries are advertised by their manufacturers, but again, safety first!

Example:

You connect 1200W 48V pure sine power inverter (90% energy efficiency) to the OCELL 48V 40Ah battery. The power inverter also features maximum surge power of 2400W.

That means that the battery power is up to 1333W continuous and 2666W surge. And when the battery is almost completely discharged, its voltage drops down to 40V (over-discharge trip voltage!), which is ~67 Amps @40V for 2666W.

Again, for safety reasons, be conservative regarding battery capacity and output power and avoid BMS disconnecting the battery as much as possible - this goes for all LiFePO4 batteries, not just OCELL 48V 40Ah battery.

ocell 48v 40ah battery mLong Story Short: If You are looking for a lightweight but strong and reliable 48V LiFePO4 battery, consider the OCELL 48V 40Ah battery.

It supports up to 2C (80A) discharge current, can be recharged quickly, features an expected lifetime of 10 years (5-year limited warranty), supports at least 2000-4000 charging/discharging cycles (0.2C, 80% DoD), etc.

Really nice battery - treat it as recommended by the manufacturer (just don't load it with 4000W output power), and it will serve you for a long time.
